Four Tet – There is Love in You

Is there comfort in repetition? There certainly is when those seemingly repetitive sounds are underscored with a world of creative impulses and unique sounds that are both understated and bold. It’s this subtle movement in the background that keeps this instrumental music from becoming mere aural wallpaper. There are vocals in the mix but they are used more as an instrument than a lyrical device.

London born Kieran Hebden is a musical man about town and it’s easier to say who he hasn’t remixed in the English music scene than who he has. Everyone from Radiohead to Black Sabbath have had tracks re-imagined by Hebden. With Four Tet, he gets to fully realize his own vision and he creates a storybook world filled with as much colour as some of the world’s great fairy tales. A parallel would be the musical equivalent of the colour of a Tim Burton film.

Four Tet is as much a concept as a band and over the musical collective’s decade plus existence there have been an impressive collection of surprises. It’s this fluidity that allows Hebden to create and grow and take his listeners along with him.

There Is Love In You is clever, fun and irrepressible and no your CD player isn’t malfunctioning during playback of the opening track Angel Echoes.
