Tonight – Franz Ferdinand

Ah, the eternal question that faces all successful bands with the follow-up to the album that broke them big to a mainstream audience. Do they strive for artistic or commercial success? With Tonight, the new album by Scottish rock band Franz Ferdinand, the answer remains firmly in between those two points. While in some ways this mimics the “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” attitude, they do expand their craft enough to intrigue new fans a bit and keep died in the wool fans happy as well.

The easiest aural comparison with elements of their new sound would be with the band, Spoon. That American groups take on sparse and minimal funk finds an appealing home in the Scottish clan’s arsenal while lead singer Alex Kapranos’ warble stands out no matter what genre the four-piece tackles. The band also incorporates an African influence that fits well with the band’s already established less is more production style.

The band’s penchant for smart production choices and even smarter lyrics remains firmly entrenched, so don’t be surprised if these 12 songs end up blasting from speakers big and small and from collections that range from the conventional to the esoteric.

As the summer get underway elsewhere in the world, we in the land down under can have a soundtrack that will keep things hot while our land cools while at other points on the globe, they can have cool sounds for hot times.
