Jimi Hendrix – Hendrix In The West

Long overdue in the wave after wave of Jimi Hendrix re-issues is Hendrix In The West. The original version of this album was first released in 1972 and as was the case for most of those first few posthumous albums was filled with an amusing number of anomalies. Songs names and places of performance listed incorrectly, misleading album titles (the original line-up of songs came from around the globe) and of course there was the aroma of Mike Jeffery’s desire to cash in that wafted over the entire proceedings. These lapses of judgement were however offset by the collected tracks forming one of the most vivid representations ever of Jimi’s amazing facility in the live setting.

There are moments of both otherworld guitar prowess (the amazing wah-wah crescendo of Red House) and compositional excellence (Little Wing) but what comes across most strongly was how much positive energy Jimi had when the heavens aligned and he could leave the material world behind and just play. The force of tracks like Fire and Johnny B. Goode also showed that Hendrix could step outside the spacey drug induced vibe that infused a lot of his live meanderings.

Using modern studio technology has cleaned up the sound, like peeling away an old varnish finish to reveal more of the grain but the effect isn’t as startling as was the case with some of the previous re-issues as the live source material had quite a lot of stage noise with amp buzz and the like being recorded on the master tapes.

Playing a very worn vinyl copy of the original Hendrix In The West all these years and refusing to pay the exorbitant cost of a rare Japanese import CD version, one had to patiently await the powers to be getting around to rereleasing this title and while this isn’t an exact reproduction of the original, it’s still been well worth the wait.
