Wait For Me – Moby

Moby as a brand carries a bit of luggage. His music tends to come at you from so many different places, cool bars, clothing stores, hipster parties and at the same time not come at you from distasteful places like cars with thumpingly loud stereos and sound bleed from overly loud iPods in public places. His music has often represented a choice of cool style over youthful exuberance and bombast. This is indeed a good thing when the disposition strikes.

With Wait For Me, the mood on the surface is definitely chill while the underlining lyrical themes are anything but. Pale Horses is a good case in point; its plush aural backdrop underlines a tale of mournful loneliness as guest vocalist Amelia Ziria Brown sings of isolation and longing for a family now nonexistent. On Walk With Me, Leela James seeks spiritual comfort while on Mistake, the man himself uses his sing speak voice to reflect on mistakes made (relationship or otherwise?). Elsewhere Melody Zimmer’s vocals give JLTF the perfect angelic yet somber character.

The main sounds here come from studio craft rather than raw emotion. Moby is smart enough to know that his voice while pleasant is far from the emotional tool needed to translate the impact needed so he leaves that up to guest vocalists. This approach works quite well and the combination of his studio orchestrations and their pipes gives the work a real impact while never being far from tasteful.

It’s to Moby’s credit that even with the plethora of guest vocalists, Wait For Me still sounds like an album by nobody else. Individual progression is something most accurately assessed in hindsight and with his latest album, Moby adds another worthy addition to his catalogue and provides a new musical backdrop to many sophisticated occasions.
