Passenger – Flight Of The Crow
There is something about the reductive nature of folk music that makes it stand out from a lot of the overproduced material that one is exposed to these days. Often just the human voice and an acoustic instrument or two, this stripped back approach places a premium on lyrical content and vocal interplay.
On Flight Of The Crow, Brighton born singer/songwriter Mike Rosenberg casts aside his usual band mates to venture forth as a solo artist (albeit one with lots of talented friends to help out). He raised the funds to finance this record by busking around Australia and the time spent in that sun-drenched land has had a positive effect on the finished results.
Featuring antipodean pals like Katie Noonan, Matt Corby, Kate Miller Heidke and Josh Pyke among others, the beautiful vocal union of Rosenberg and his mates give all the tracks a more than sunny disposition. The minimal production also puts the voices front and center, where they belong.
Without the intrusion of overproduction and a well-conceived sense of craft, these 11 tracks have a forward momentum that has more to do with purpose and less to do with studio enhancement. If it’s been a while since a folk record has been spun at your place, there is no time like the present to fix that shortfall. Rob Hudson www.passengerofficial.com
