Rotating Leslie – The Walls Have Ears
Got to love a band that likens their music to a sound “Somewhere between Slade, Slayer and Leo Sayer” When you spin The Walls Have Ears you can definitely hear echoes of Slade and Leo Sayer but as far as the Slayer comparison goes, get back to you on that one. Regardless of the lack of music that will pummel you into senselessness, what you do have here is a bubbly concoction of various elements of pop and a somewhat edgier blend of influences all delivered with a lusty and youthful approach.
This is great music to play before you go out and do something stupid, like rollerblading naked, surfing in jellyfish laden waters, wakeboarding on broken glass or riding your BMX bike with a seat post but no seat. As long as things go your way it’s all good but run into the occasion rough patch and it could turn out somewhat painful.
When listening to the 12 tracks here, it’s not surprising to learn that the band hail from England or that it was created out of a group of high school friends. It has that effervescence that is rare in music made for serious reasons and as such retains a high level of immediate entertainment value.
Music this frothy and accessible has a fairly limited shelf life but put that notion to one side and just enjoy the ride while it lasts. Rob Hudson www.myspace.com/rotatingleslie
