Slivovitz β Hubris
If there was ever an argument that music is a universal language, Hubris by the band Slivovitz is a good case study to the affirmative. The band members reside in Naples, Italy, their name comes from a plum brandy concoction made predominantly in the Slavic regions of Central and Eastern Europe, the group are signed to a New York record label and their music uses influences from around the globe.
Their modus operandi is to constantly surprise the listener with melodic twists and turns and while doing so use as many instruments as they can get their hands on. It all has a wonderful storybook quality where every turn of the page yields unique and fresh perspectives.
At various times the music is both insanely funky and cerebrally intense. The band has an amazing ability to throw so much heady stuff your way, all the while making sure that the ear-to-ear grin never leaves your face. There is a positivity at play here that is truly inspiring.
When you have to name check so many different genres to describe the music that is afoot here, itβs easier to just come up with your own descriptive term and mine is Bedtime Story Jazz for Rock Dreams. I think that will do nicely for now. Rob Hudson www.myspace.com/slivovitz
