The Best Of Bond… James Bond
Various Artists

As a microcosm of popular trends in the music industry, this collection of Bond movie opening credit tunes is quite entertaining if not unintentionally comical. Its standout tracks have become synonymous with the 007 franchises and were often huge hits during their day. Who can forget Oddjob and Auric Goldfinger when you hear Shirley Bassey open up those wonderful pipes singing the opening notes from Goldfinger. Fact is, she was so good, she got a few more grabs at the brass ring when she returned to open Diamond Are Forever and Moonraker.

As the Bond films went from sublime to ridiculous and back, so did a lot of the title tracks. You went from memorable songs from iconic artists such as Tom Jones, Nancy Sinatra and Louis Armstrong to forgettable fare from Duran Duran, A-Ha and Sheryl Crow.

As the franchise regained a somewhat harder edge during the Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan period, so did the music. You went from the above-mentioned lightweights to global acts like Madonna, Garbage and ex-Soundgarden front man Chris Cornell.

The thing that surprises most about this collection of songs is that even if the particular Bond film was forgettable, when you hear these songs you forgive their digressions and enjoy the nostalgic moments that only music can create in your memory and fortunately this is much more forgiving than remembering the movies by themselves.
