The Hazards Of Love – The Decemberists

This is the story of King Colin. Now he and his minstrels have always filled the land with song. The sound of voices raised in song accompanied by the strums of acoustic instruments has been known for many years. But now there is a rumble in the realm as the King tries to crank up the noise. The question now arises, is the King sporting some shiny new threads or is he standing there completely starkers?

Like all good fairy tales, the story is usually told in words leaping from the page of a dusty old book, one that reveals tails of pomp and circumstance. However, here you have the requisite pomp but the circumstance is now being told with strokes of slashing guitar and power chord concoctions that could have easily come from the bubbling caldron of some irate war wizard.

While noble in his attempt to enrich the lives and expand the perimeters of what is acceptable to his loyal followers, this tale relies quite heavily on their good graces. And while being forgiven by his kingdom is part and parcel with being a benevolent leader, this tale might just stretch that relationship to the limit.

For citizens of other lands, this tale is a challenge of patience and perseverance, for those that live in the realm, the love for their King should bid them over long enough for the tale to sink in and become shiny and new.
