The Gin Club – Deathwish

Look up collective in the dictionary and the phrase 'the collective assets of a company’ has real relevance when describing the musical output of this Brisbane eight piece band.

The group’s ability to stay so free from individual classification while still being indentified by a strong band sound is remarkable. Multi-voiced harmonies chase each other through a landscape that includes country hitching posts and expansive vistas.

Not everything is wide-open landscape though and there are more than a few moments where a thought of a grungy nightclub’s oppressively small space comes to mind. The effect of this connection condenses the music into hard brittle balls of scorn.

Having so many songwriters in a band could have easily led to a clash of the titan’s mentality if it weren’t for the band’s impeccable taste and ability to submerge individual ego for the common good. Never sounding less than a room full of friends, Deathwish is anything but a forbearer of doom.
