The Very Very Best of Crowded House
On the eve of their Australasian tour comes The Very (Very) Best of Crowded House, a much more comprehensive compilation release than 1996's Recurring Dream. The new album is not so much a collection of singles as was Recurring Dream but rather a collection of some of the finest songs in Neil Finn's repertoire irrespective of whether they were singles or not. The result is a mixture of songs that are infinitely playable and stand as a testament to the calibre of one of the finest popular music writers of our generation.
The album represents a clearing of the decks between the infectious Finn pop straddling the mid 80s to the mid 90s and the much more introspectively crafted post-Hester Crowded House v2.0 characterised by the two most recent albums, Time On Earth and Intriguer. There are a few songs included from the former, however, to introduce the new content to old fans.
Combining popular stalwarts such as Mean To Me, Something So Strong and Fall At Your Feet with lesser known fan favourites such as Recurring Dream, Hole In The River and Whispers And Moans, there is not a dud among them and the songs offer an excellent introduction to Crowded House virgins and fun, compelling listening for fans alike. ‘Best of’ compilations don't come any finer than this.
Released in single CD, single CD + DVD and double CD + DVD incarnations, the album is also available with four different covers (representing the four seasons) for die-hard collectors. Stuart Jamieson www.crowdedhouse.com
