The Conversation – Tim Finn
There must be something in the water in Te Awamutu, New Zealand. The
waters that cascade through town from the Waipa River can at times be
crystal clear or bubbling with effervescent life. This can also
describe the musical output from the town’s most famous export, the
Finn Brothers.
On older sibling Tim’s latest solo offering, The Conversation, the mood
is at times somber and the songs are generally delivered with a pared
back level of production that keeps the song’s message on point. The
percussion is kept to a minimum and acoustic instruments dominate
(including a cool sounding bowed saw in The Saw And The Tree).
The songs also form a connection to both past and present with musical
guests and sonic reminders from many points of Finn’s career. The
vocals are as beautiful as you would expect and clever ideas abound. It
all unfolds with a relaxed ease.
This is elegant pop music that could only be created by a man at peace
with his considerable talents and unafraid to indulge in the joys of
being older and wiser and more tasteful. Rob Hudson www.myspace.com/timfinnmusic
