Washed Out – Within and Without
The success of Ernest Greene and his project Washed Out is a great indicator of a new order for how a musician can seep into the public consciousness and jump-start a career. Greene started out in the bedroom and has now moved onto the world stage.
All this talk about career progression has even more impact when the music produced is so gorgeous. The sound of Washed Out and bands of this ilk have helped to coin the phrase ‘Chillwave’ and it’s an accurate description. This is music that washes over you and has the effect of rinsing away a lot of negative mind space.
Greene first came to people’s attention though on-line mentions by a few influential music bloggers and their admiration for Washed Out’s first two Eps, Life of Leisure and High Times. With the project’s first full album Within and Without, the time and space is provided for Greene’s vision to reach a rich new fullness. It still feels mostly self-produced but the sound has become more expansive and universal.
As music to sooth a frazzled mind, Within and Without hits the mark while the release of the album on the major label Sub Pop heralds another path to the destination of getting one’s music heard by more than just close friends. Rob Hudson www.inertia-music.com
