We Have Band – WHB
Having never really liked dance music with its often repetitive nature, a band has to really mix things up in this genre to keep my interest. We Have Band are the latest in that line of multi-approach ravers and their first release, WHB is something to behold.
It starts serious with the melancholic tracks, Piano and Buffet, that wouldn’t sound that out of place on an Elbow album, then it gets funky with the fat keyboard driven Divisive. It’s a call to arms advance that marks the album’s decent into toe tapping and body moving bliss.
To its credit it never resolves into just regurgitated histrionics but includes memorable melodies throughout. There is an abundance of studio craft and grooves but they seem to come more from human fingers on instruments and not just strokes on a computer's keyboard.
We Have Band have game and if every dance band could come up with something this inventive and inviting, I will have to readdress my misplaced aversion to this art form. Rob Hudson
