White Denim – D

For us dyed in the wool progressive rock fans, thank goodness for bands like White Denim. There will always be the grand old dinosaurs like King Crimson, Pink Floyd and Gentle Giant to enjoy (and annoy) but if we are ever going to get the people around us to enjoy this most idiosyncratic of art forms, it will be due to bands like White Denim.

On D, all the elements are there, the weird time signatures, crazy instrumentation and wild flights of compositional fancy but alongside that enjoyable excess are moments of subtle bliss like Street Joy or Keys where song construction is put at a premium and vocals are properly included and not just added on top.

It’s no surprise to learn that this four-piece band hails from Austin, Texas, home to a vibrant and fertile music scene and one that is known to combine disparate musical genres to good effect. Any band that can get away with incorporating the old prog stand by, the flute into song writing and succeed rates high in this book.

At only 37 minutes long D doesn’t overstay its welcome in deference to some other progsters who would use that amount of time to just play an intro. This is fast and fun stuff and something that your significant other might even one day enjoy.
