![]() White Rabbits – It’s Frightening Sometimes a band can be seduced by all the futuristic technology available to them in the studio and produce work that sounds amazing at first listen but has very little staying power. White Rabbits’ new album, It’s Frightening provides a perfect antithesis to that approach. Even though the band is made up of six multi-instrumentalists, there is an adherence to an ethos of using just the right amount of sonic augmentation and not a bit more. This approach only works successfully when the songs are strong and the ten tracks here are uniformly well written. There is also an earthiness and lack of pretension that frames the songs with a rustic appeal but one that is driven by the real sounds of hands on wood and steel and not pushing plastic buttons. The tracks are built on succinct grooves that grab hold and don’t let go. It’s not surprising to find that Spoon front man Britt Daniel helped the band to realize their groove thing by helping with production duties. With this sophomore effort, White Rabbits show progression from their debut album Fort Nightly without having to radically alter the things that made them so interesting in the first place. This is the sound of a talented band hitting their stride. Rob Hudson whiterabbitsmusic.com White Rabbits "Percussion Gun" Music Video from White Rabbits on Vimeo.
