Big Deal – Lights Out
All band notoriety aside, is there any subject matter that creates more column inches than love? Be it manifest as love, lust, longing or any of the other pertinent L words, the meeting of mind, flesh and purpose is a universal subject that transcends all mediums.
The approach of Kacey Underwood and Alice Costelloe to the tracks on their debut album, Lights Out, maps out an approach notable for its lack of a conventional rhythm section (no bass and drums) while the use of only acoustic and electric guitar has the accumulative effect of placing more focus on the song's end run and less on how they got there.
There is a brittle innocence in Costelloe’s voice that invites the listener to relive personal moments of youthful folly while Underwood’s contribution of both slashing electric guitar lines and warm temperance expands the relevance beyond just past indiscretions. We all have stories that we would rather keep to ourselves but they reveal more about us than obvious antidotes.
The minimalist instrumental approach can at times strip the music of its ability to surprise but this is easily offset by the moments of internal revelation. The universal nature of love and all of its embarrassments and enrichments pads the experience with mind bullets all of our own making. Rob Hudson www.myspace.com/weareabigdeal
