douBt – Never Pet A Burning Dog
If this, my first album of 2010 is any indication, this is going to be a stellar new year. douBt are a trio made of members from across the globe and signed to a New York label and they play a type of music that easily qualifies as sensory overload. It’s excessive in the best possible way.
Take a supreme level of pure musicianship and give the players a free reign to let their imaginations go completely wild unencumbered by any commercial restrictions and you end up with the eight burners that make up the new album, Never Pet A Burning Dog.
This is mostly instrumental music and the vocabulary of guitarist Michel Delville and keyboardist Alex Maguire is so expansive, the human voice isn’t missed. Their ability to add depth and nuance to the ideas and diverse moods behind the songs make for a constantly evolving tonal pallet. There is distinction in the details both major and minor.
Any collection worthy of being called complete should contain examples of this type of audio overload. It’s not for the weak of ear but for those with a taste for bold statement, it’s a lot of fun.
