Feist – Metals
In our age of information overload, the cult of personality can grow for no real substantial reason. Our social landscape is littered with subjects that are famous for just being famous and then there are the ones deserved of the attention. Feist (born Leslie Feist) is the latter. She has amassed an impressive body of work thus far with her solo work as well as her contributions to Broken Social Scene and other projects, musical and otherwise.
Her solo work carries with it an air of expectation as well as a legion of blind admiration. Getting past the surface gloss does present somewhat of a challenge. Her music can be so gorgeous on the surface that for many that in and of itself is enough but for some it's just the starting point.
Her music occupies a corner of the musical landscape where listeners often want more substantial fare while still desiring an ambiguity that allows the songs to speak to a more individual need. Few in popular music can walk this razor’s edge with such grace and poise.
Individual take aside, Metals can provide many things to many people. From the smooth and sultry backdrop of a chill evening session to the intellectual perk of morning coffee, this album is a multi faceted jewel. Rob Hudson www.listentofeist.com
