My Best Fiend – In Ghostlike Fading
Like the Werner Herzog film the band is named after, My Best Fiend delivers an album deep in duality. There is the obvious grandiosity and then there are the beautiful melodies but not far under the surface is a darker context. It’s this juxtaposition between light and dark that gives the work its depth and longevity.
Soaring guitars underline brittle confessions while vocalists Fred Coldwell and Paul Jenkins intertwine their voices until they become one. Then there are times where the instrumentation drops away and the relationship between listener and musician becomes almost confessional. Forgive me father for I have sinned and no number of Hail Marys will give me a pass this time.
The band is also unafraid to just overwhelm with volume and the moments of acoustic sincerity run headlong into an overdriven frenzy of words and electric might. The created tempest is almost dizzying.
At times grand, at times a little sinister and even at times understated, My Best Fiend have created a work that unravels right before your ears in the most engaging way. The full album will be released in February, until then use the link below to stream the standout track Cracking Eggs with its Grand Canyon wide dynamics or to download the album’s opening anthem, Higher Palms.
