The Jimi Hendrix Experience – Winterland

Some say The Jimi Hendrix Experience Mark 1 was the purest distillation of Jimi’s enormous talent and they may have a valid point. The early influence of Chas Chandler, who pulled Hendrix out of the toil of the chitlin circuit in America, flew him to England, helped to put together his first really successful band and provided a workman-like influence on his early recordings was a strong one. His no nonsense approach did impart a focus not found in subsequent recordings and the early works do have a purity of intent not found later.

The live recordings of that first version of The Experience also feature a thrilling sense of discovery for both audience and band members. Noel Redding was still somewhat happy in his subservient role and Mitch Mitchell was at the start of his own ascendancy and his playing was the spark plug that helped ignite those amazing guitar pyrotechnics night after night. So when Jimi and the band rolled into that old refurbished ice-skating rink back in 1968, the heavens were in alignment for something very special.

The series of gigs that ran at Winterland also provided Jimi and the boys a rare opportunity to play multiple nights in the same venue and relief from the drag of constant travel shows in the performances. The band really had the opportunity to stretch out and songs were played that got little or no subsequent use later in the band’s live set-lists. The no bullshit influence of the ballroom’s impresario Bill Graham was also strongly felt. Jimi knew that mere theatrics wouldn’t satisfy the prickly promoter.

The band dug deep night after night and few instances of their recorded live work burn as bright as these tracks do. There are two versions of this set available, a single-disc set and a four-disc set that features even more treasures. The expanded set also includes an interesting recorded interview where Jimi defends his artistic vision with a combination of stronger than normal replies and his usual engaging hippy speak.

The relevance of the ever-expanding selection of Hendrix releases over forty years after his passing often comes down to personal preference but for a live representation of one of Jimi’s strongest musical periods, the Winterland recordings have undeniable worth.
