EP
Borne
With a sound both melodramatic and emotionally satisfying, Melbourne act Borne have delivered an EP of songs that tell stories. I had to get in touch with the band because I knew that there would be interesting stories behind these stories. I wasn’t wrong.
Coma
“We were looking for something with a different taste for the EP, something that wasn't too similar to what we have for the upcoming album. Our producer Mike Stangel showed me a song that he had written recently and initially I was just going to demo it for him, but I found that I got into it so much that I asked him if I could include it on the EP. He had just been through a similar experience to me in regards to a past relationship and I found that I really connected with the lyrical content and the overall emotion of the song. I suppose it's kind of dark rock but I've heard people say that it's uplifting at the same time. It also allows me to stretch my vocal chords, it’s extremely demanding vocally! If it were a colour, it would be the kind of colours you see in a storm front before it bursts!”
Beautiful
“Every single person on this planet at some point of time in their lives will experience or have experienced a life altering situation... good or bad, I believe it's what you take from these lessons that make us up as individuals. I recently learned from one of these experiences...a deep deep sense of loss after my relationship broke down. At the time I couldn't believe it had happened to me and I just wouldn't (couldn't) see the sense and reasoning behind it all. It wasn't until I had gone for a surf to clear my head that everything started to make sense. There is beauty in EVERY situation, EVERY situation! Being able to let go has taught me a lot about beauty and what the real meaning of the word is, well, my interpretation of it anyway! It's truly within us all, some on the exterior, some interior but within us all all the same! This song is a deep deep blue with shafts of light.”
Sleep With Your Eyes Open
“When I think of this song, for some reason I get an image of soft whipped cream smothering a black forest cherry cake! Weird I know, but I think that if I were to explore the imagery it would have something to do with the feel of the song rather than what the lyrical content alludes to. It has a very lazy, almost sinister approach. It's about the possibilities of passion. Its colour is cream and black!”
Sleep On It
“This song initially came to me in a dream. I had come home from a hard days ride in London. I was a sandwich delivery guy in the West End and would cover about ten miles a day on pushbike, lifting heavy trays of sandwiches up staircases etc. I came back absolutely exhausted and put my head down for a power nap! Just as I was drifting off to sleep and thinking about pulling the plug on the whole London thing, this song popped into my head and I awoke to record it. It is exactly how I dreamed it, floating and melodic with an underlying edginess. I remember my dad saying to me on countless occasions that if you have a problem go to bed and sleep on it and the answer will be clear as day in the morning. I ended up staying in London a further four years and continued to write and work with other artists based there. It was the best decision I have ever made! I see gold leaves and green grass when I hear this song!”
Lychee
“Unbelievably, this was created in almost the exact same situation as Sleep On It, in a dream. It came to me in the same house and in the same week! I'm still not sure why but it must have been a very inspiring week, or difficult, one of the two. I dreamed the chorus and the main riff, da da da da da da da da da da da da "I feel bitter on the outside, sweet within.."
It wasn't until the next day that I was washing up thinking about the song and what I would call it when I looked to my right and noticed a Lychee fruit alone in a bowl. I picked it up and ate it thinking that the fruit was very sweet on the inside for such an odd and ugly looking exterior, I then began to sing "I feel bitter on the outside, sweet within..." and decided to call the song Lychee. The name never appears in the song and I love that! I think of flashes of lightning and soft and permanent rain when listening to it.”
Thanks guys.
