Get The Business Done
Her Majesty's Finest
I got in touch with Mav from the band Her Majesty's Finest to get a few words on the tracks from their upcoming pop delight, Get The Business Done.
Long Time Nothing New
A pounding My Sharona type back beat heralds the album's opening. The tale is told of a punch-drunk musician still trying to capture his ambitions despite the many obstacles the years have provided.
Mav: "Autobiographical to be sure."
Stars Are Falling
Written whilst on a brief escape to Red Hill, the sand and sea take influence on this track of castaway love and yearning.
Mav: "Finger's plays a lovely melodic solo over the close of this track. Nice one lemon squeezer."
In Her Command
The album's most soulful and organic moment. Choice line "Written in the past of every heart / I was not your first but I hope to be your last".
Mav: "Everyone jammed their parts on this song. It has a lovely acoustic natural vibe. It's my favourite track of the album, sort of our Hide Your Love Away moment."
Amelia
In the grand tradition of The Beatles' Julia and Elvis Costello's Alison, Her Majesty's take a stab at the 'name-game' song and come out with this three & a half minute, sunshine drenched pop gem.
Mystery
A Rickenbacker jingle-jangle homage to cruising on your Vespa, forgetting your worries and soaking in the rays on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
Mav: "I had this song humming in my head since I was young. I love everything about this song. Perhaps the definitive recording of everything the band aspires to be."
10,000 Years
Her Majesty's re-enter the rock fold with this giant guitar song rounded out by the ringing of church bells! Loosely based on Baz Lurman's re-interpretation of Romeo & Juliet, this song attempts to crystallise youthful passion & commitment just before reality forces romantic intentions to destroy the moment.
Get The Business Done
The album's title track is also its most experimental. Laced with a razor sharp guitar hook provided by Finger's Ryan, the band experiments with drum processing and a spoken word verse expounding the virtues of keeping cool under pressure. "You've got the fire and you're hard & lean / Play for keeps like you're Connery & McQueen". The band's 60's influences reassert themselves with the Lalo Schffrin inspired flute solo.
STOP!
A live favourite, STOP! features a walking bass line and a finger snappin' back beat. Featuring a Cincinnati Kid style main character pitting his wits and fortune against the high rollers to take the town. TRIVIA NOTE: the song title is a reversal of The Jam's START!
Mav: "As they say, a right old knees up this one! Here's to the Easybeats for the inspiration".
Logan 6
A strange brew of Brian Eno meets The Who in this 70's synthesiser driven instrumental which sets up the album's first single. Recorded by Mav & the band's fifth 'unofficial' member, Tarkus at his Yesfield studio.
Mav explains: "There is a little synth nod to Won't Get Fooled Again towards the end of Blue. With Logan 6, Tarkus and I opened up that idea and created a whole new soundtrack which gives the listener an ear break from all the guitar tracks. It's kinky and different and I dig it."
Blue
Recorded in June of 2002, Blue features all the members of Her Majesty's Finest solidified line-up. The lyrics deal with the serious subject of abusive relationships, focussing on the plight of a woman who is about to leave her partner because he can't control his temper and moods. Lyrics such as "Your hands were tied, you grew so low, somehow to nowhere" paint the picture of melancholy and frustration. The song ends with the woman vowing to leave her partner, for now.
Slides Away
The albums slow burning epic, which reaches dizzying heights of feedback by the songs closing. A tale of isolation and self-belief. Choice lyric: "Awake, alone...to be so far taken from all you've known"
Her Majesty
The album's closer is a short and simple three-part fan fare putting a royal finishing touch to the guitar pop that has gone before. Trumpets trail off into the distance as a piano slowly fades.
Mav: "I wanted to round the album off with a coda of sorts just to put a full stop to the record and this seemed like a nice way to end on a different note, something a little different".
Thanks Mav. The album will be released in March.
