Time to get Festive in the Valley – an Interview
with Little Scout!

Fortitude Valley will come alive on the weekend of October 23 through 25 with Valley Fiesta 2009. It’s a weekend-long celebration of our city’s most vibrant entertainment area. There will be loads of free activities and top-notch performances by some great acts. One of the most promising local acts will be Little Scout, their infectious take on pop music will be sure to entertain all members of the family. I recently caught up with band member Laura K to get some details on her path to music.

How long have you lived in Brisbane?
“About 12 years.”

Was your family into the arts?
“My dad has a very strong love of music and he plays the piano really well and my mum loves musicals. Neither of them were ever really involved in the arts to the same extent as I am, but they're both positive and supportive of what I'm doing.”

What did your first exposure to music consist of?
“ My first two favourite bands were the Beatles - thanks to my dad - and ABBA - thanks to my mum. My dad used to play Beatles songs to me on guitar when I was a baby, so I suppose I naturally grew up with a love of music because my dad was always playing the piano and guitar."

At what age and circumstance did you start to get into live performance?
“I first started playing the piano when I was five and I also used to do ballet and tap dancing when I was a wee lass. My first live performance of anything was probably when I was six - I was in a ballet production of Beatrix Potter for an Esteddford. I was a mouse.”

Did you feel like music was a life's calling?
“Certainly! I've never been unsure about pursuing music (I mean, at one point in my life I had aspirations to work in a butterfly house), but deep down I have this strange belief that music is the only thing I can contribute to the world and I don't feel like there is anything else in life that I'm any good at.”

Any interesting/horrible jobs you did to help you pursue your interest in a musical career?
“I haven't had to do anything too out of the ordinary at this stage, but you never know what could happen. The only horrible thing I can think of was my first job at a fast food chain that shall remain unnamed - it scared & scarred me. I didn't enjoy burning myself with hot chip oil or dealing with people who had what I like to call 'hungerage'! Serving people made me nervous and shaky to the extent that I dropped chicken nuggets on the floor."

Please describe how you felt before your first professional gig.
“I honestly can't remember the way I felt the first time I ever played live in a band. I imagine I was nervous, but nothing compares to the sheer, gut wrenching panic I felt before playing my first solo show. I felt entirely weak and vulnerable. Part of me was so, so afraid of disappointing all my friends who had come to support me. Even now the idea of playing solo freaks me out, I'd much prefer to play in a band with my delightful Scouties.”

Please describe the method you use to compose music?
“Usually something in my day will inspire me or I'll come up with a phrase or melody, then I'll sit down with my piano or guitar and attempt to make something out of it. Ideas can float into my head so unexpectedly, and these days they sit there waiting to be used because I'm too busy, lazy or disheartened to do something about it.”

In your own words, can you please describe what the punters can expect from your Valley Fiesta set?
“Ohhh, us Scouties are pretty excited about this show. We will be bopping away as usual with smiles plastered all over our faces. We absolutely love playing shows, especially ones with our friends and ESPECIALLY ones that are all ages!!  We plan to dress up nicely and we may even wash our hair!"

In the future, would you like to branch out even further into the creative arts? And if so into what area?
“I've been thinking about writing songs for other artists or maybe writing jingles or film music. I also wouldn't mind getting some experience in what happens behind the scenes.”

Food for though: A conversation with Meshell Ndegeocello

Talking to Meshell Ndegeocello is a unique experience, she is soft spoken and easy to laugh with and conversation with her is very comfortable. Her music is sensual and inviting as is her manner on the phone. She also has a humbleness that feels real but is unafraid to speak her mind.

Dean Spanley

New Zealand born movie producer Matthew Metcalfe came to be in the movie business in a most unusual way, which is detailed below.
