![]() Peace Train – The Cat Stevens Story Interview with Darren Coggan Peace Train – The Cat Stevens Story is a stage show that will take audiences on the same journey of discovery and enlightenment traveled by Cat himself, with unique insights into the heart and mind of one of the greatest singer/songwriters of our time. In Australia during the ‘70s almost one in two people owned a Cat Stevens album. One of Australia's most exciting young artists Darren Coggan, backed by the high-energy live band, Fire Cats will, over two electrifying performances in Brisbane, take audiences on a truly magical ride of discovery, back through the joys and the sorrows, the triumphs and the pain, in the life of the legend that was the one and only, Cat Stevens. Which came first, music or theatre? “The two have always gone hand in hand. Professionally I started as a musician, singer-songwriter and later had the opportunity to explore musical theatre genre, however I have always enjoyed both from a very young age.” Did you grow up in a musical or theatrical family? “My family is very musical, lovers of all styles and genres of music. My sister, Naomi, and I are the only ones who have made careers from music, but it runs deep in our heritage.” Did you undertake any professional training? “Yes I have had various, guitar, vocal and acting coaches over the years, starting at the age of 6 when I commenced guitar lessons.” What was your first professional gig like? “I was 14; my band ‘Typhoon’ had a Sunday lunchtime residency at The Home Hotel in Wagga Wagga. I got paid $40. It was great fun – wonderful memories of my youth.” How did you feel before it? “Excited, quite relaxed really, it was a very casual ‘family friendly’ affair. The audience was filled with family and friends so it was just like a lounge room sing-a-long.” How do you prepare for your public performances? “I don’t have any unusual routines – just like any great performer I make sure I am well rehearsed, healthy, enthusiastic and honest with the performance.” I grew up with the music of Cat Stevens and have great memories of the summer Wild World got released as a single, any similar moments when you first heard Cat’s music? “My earliest memories of Cat’s music are of me as a young boy learning the guitar at age six. His songs are obviously very accessible for a guitarist and I remember one of the first songs I learned was Moonshadow.” In your own words, what can punters expect with Peace Train – The Cat Stevens Story? “Our audiences obviously expect to hear the great musical legacy Cat has given us in songs such as Father and Son, Moonshadow, Where do the Children Play and of course Peace Train. However they walk away with so much more – having an insight into the inspiring personal journey of this great man.” What do you think of Yusuf Islam’s proper return to the music business in 2006 and have you heard his new album Roadsinger? “Like all of Cat’s fans I was thrilled at the release of his 2006 offering ‘Another Cup’ and his return to music. He is blessed with a great gift and I’m grateful he is sharing it with the world again. I was given his latest album Roadsinger as a birthday gift from my children recently. I really enjoy it – the gentle heart rending songs from a truly inspiring songsmith.” What will you be working on after the Peace Train tour? “The next Peace Train tour – I hope to continue this journey for some time and there are lots of stations to stop at!” More information about the Peace Train – The Cat Stevens Story click here >> Peace Train – The Cat Stevens Story Venue: QPAC, Brisbane Dates: 09-10/10/09 Running Time: Approx 2 Hours 20 minutes (20 minute intermission) Cost: $75–85 Official Site: www.qpac.com.au |
